Choose your bleep test before you start training

Check the distance, protocol and assessment stage before choosing your practice test.

Start with the instructions from the organisation assessing you. A bleep-test score is only useful when you know which test produced it. The distance between the lines and the audio protocol both matter.

Brought to you by Level Best. Practise your bleep test, save your results and keep track of your personal bests in one app. This guide helps you choose the right protocol before you start.

Write down the exact requirement

Keep a note of the organisation, role, assessment stage, track distance and required protocol. Save the official page or your assessment instructions alongside it. Recruitment requirements and tests for serving staff can differ, so a score someone mentions in a forum may describe a different assessment.

If the instructions only say “bleep test”, ask the recruiting organisation which version they mean before choosing your practice audio. Level Best is an independent training tool; its practice results do not replace an official assessment.

Check whether a bleep test is the right preparation

The British Army’s current fitness page distinguishes a 2 km run for soldier assessment from a 20 m multi-stage fitness test for officers. That is a useful example of why searching only for an organisation’s name can produce the wrong preparation advice. Check the page for your chosen role and follow your current assessment instructions.

For fire-service applications, use the particular service’s recruitment information. Avon Fire and Rescue’s practical tests page is an example of a service publishing its own test details. It should not be treated as the requirements for every fire service.

Match your course and audio

Once the protocol is confirmed, measure the required distance between your two lines. In Level Best, choose the matching test before starting the audio. Moving the lines while keeping the same audio does not create an equivalent version of the test.

Level Best offers 15-metre police, 20-metre, Léger and Yo-Yo protocols. Check the selected protocol each time, especially if you practise with other people using different settings. Pick a suitable clear practice space and follow the assessment organisation’s preparation guidance.

Keep practice results comparable

Record which protocol you used with the result. When comparing sessions, account for changes in the surface, course layout or conditions. A different setup can make the numbers misleading even when you feel you have worked equally hard.

The immediate goal is a reliable baseline. From there, a record of repeated practice on the same protocol is more useful than comparing unrelated scores from different tests.
